Candidate

  • Upstream canonical URL: https://github.com/happyhorseskull/you-can-datamosh-on-linux
  • Source pinned commit/release when known: bc4df09891139649d7848540d32c0b2216aa748f on master (default branch snapshot reviewed 2026-08-14).
  • Target concrete installed deliverable: Datamosh and video-to-GIF Python command-line scripts
  • Primary category: multimedia
  • Tags: image-processing
  • Primary language normalized: Python
  • Build system: Custom Python scripts + FFmpeg (do_the_mosh.py, video_to_gif.py; no package manifest)
  • SPDX expression: Unlicense
  • License status: confirmed-free
  • License evidence: LICENSE.md dedicates the scripts to the public domain and README documents Python 3/FFmpeg usage.
  • Difficulty: easy — Install the scripts and provide FFmpeg as an explicit input; avoid network examples and preserve output-directory behavior.
  • Workflow state: ready
  • Existing Guix coverage: Checked 2026-08-14: GNU Guix, Nonguix, Guix Science, Guix HPC, Guix Past, Guix 'R Us, and RDE; no equivalent package with the same upstream origin was found.

Scope and blockers

Package the pinned upstream source as the stated deliverable, retaining upstream notices and making runtime services, credentials, downloaded assets, and optional integrations explicit. Install the scripts and provide FFmpeg as an explicit input; avoid network examples and preserve output-directory behavior.

Acceptance checks

  • guix lint -L. you-can-datamosh-on-linux passes with no new errors.
  • guix build -L. you-can-datamosh-on-linux succeeds from the pinned source with tests enabled where practical.
  • App-specific offline smoke: Run both scripts on a tiny local media fixture with a local FFmpeg binary and verify deterministic output without network.

Packaged as you-can-datamosh-on-linux in signed commit github.com/htayj/guix-channel@21681af95c. Both commands use Guix Python and FFmpeg. Packaging replaces upstream shell-command construction with argv-based subprocess calls; the committed regression proves filenames containing spaces and shell metacharacters cannot execute injected commands and verifies exact FFmpeg argument boundaries. Real tiny-media GIF and datamosh smoke tests also pass.
