Candidate

  • Upstream canonical URL: https://github.com/lambdamikel/VISCO
  • Source pinned commit/release when known: default-branch HEAD 836d325b5c6037517470835c635b3063446d3d8a (checked 2026-08-14)
  • Target concrete installed deliverable: the VISCO CLIM spatial-query application
  • Primary category: desktop-application
  • Tags: common-lisp
  • Primary language normalized: Common Lisp
  • Build system: asdf-build-system/sbcl
  • SPDX expression: GPL-3.0
  • License status: confirmed-free
  • License evidence: Inspected the upstream license text at this pinned commit; GitHub identifies it as GPL-3.0 (GNU General Public License v3.0). No GPL only-or-later term is inferred beyond the upstream evidence.
  • Difficulty: hard — Its CLIM/constraint dependencies and graphical test path need a nontrivial closure.
  • Workflow state: research
  • Existing Guix coverage: Checked 2026-08-14: GNU Guix, Nonguix, Guix Science, Guix HPC, Guix Past, Guix 'R Us, and RDE; no equivalent package with the same upstream origin was found.

Scope and blockers

Package the CLIM GUI and its local spatial-query functionality.

Acceptance checks

  • guix lint -L . visco
  • guix build -L . visco
  • load the ASDF system and open a frame with a local display.

Block lambdamikel/VISCO at revision 836d325b5c6037517470835c635b3063446d3d8a. The canonical source is free software: LICENSE lines 1-2 are the verbatim GNU General Public License Version 3, matching the existing source-snapshot declaration in guix/tay/packages/starred-i-m.scm lines 301-305. No package named visco exists locally, and the local channel contains only the source snapshot, so this is not a delivered duplicate. Source-buildability and runtime viability are not established. The tree has no .asd file; its custom loader src/LoadMe.lisp constructs logical pathnames, compiles and loads src/Defsystem/Defsystem plus src/Defsystem/define-system.lisp, then invokes defsystem:compile-load-system. The system declaration src/visco-sysdcl.lisp line 3 executes (require "clim"), and the source contains unguarded Allegro-specific packages and functions, including excl:arglist in src/Aux2/aux6.lisp and excl:run-shell-command in src/DB/map-viewer3.lisp. The maintainer states in README.md lines 10-13 that the project appears to require ACL CLIM 2 and that LispWorks 6.1 CLIM causes a segmentation violation at define-application-frame. Guix's sbclasdf-build-system therefore has no declared ASDF input point, and SBCL/McCLIM compatibility is neither declared nor demonstrated. The Guix daemon is intentionally unavailable, so daemon-backed build proof was not attempted. Exact unblocking condition: a maintained fixed revision whose complete source closure has explicit redistributable licenses, provides a loadable ASDF system for SBCL, and demonstrably runs its VISCO CLIM frame on the CLIM implementation available in Guix; the package must also provide a noninteractive deterministic runtime contract with a safe observable success marker, since the inspected GUI-only tree supplies no such invocation.
