Candidate

  • Upstream canonical URL: https://github.com/simgine/simgine
  • Source pinned commit/release when known: default-branch HEAD 166a1ed9c6bab66448bb242053faf67ffb253eaf (checked 2026-08-14)
  • Target concrete installed deliverable: the Simgine life-simulation game
  • Primary category: game
  • Tags: none
  • Primary language normalized: Rust
  • Build system: cargo-build-system
  • SPDX expression: AGPL-3.0
  • License status: confirmed-free
  • License evidence: Inspected the upstream license text at this pinned commit; GitHub identifies it as AGPL-3.0 (GNU Affero General Public License v3.0). No GPL only-or-later term is inferred beyond the upstream evidence.
  • Difficulty: hard — The multi-crate game/UI stack and graphics runtime require a substantial closure.
  • Workflow state: research
  • Existing Guix coverage: Checked 2026-08-14: GNU Guix, Nonguix, Guix Science, Guix HPC, Guix Past, Guix 'R Us, and RDE; no equivalent package with the same upstream origin was found.

Scope and blockers

Package the local game and source-controlled assets only.

Acceptance checks

  • guix lint -L . simgine
  • guix build -L . simgine
  • start a local headless or windowed smoke session using a temporary data directory.

Simgine at upstream revision 166a1ed9c6bab66448bb242053faf67ffb253eaf is not yet implementation-ready. Legal provenance is viable: upstream root COPYING is GNU AGPL-3.0, Cargo declares AGPL-3.0-or-later, app icon assets are CC0 under LICENSE-CC0, and the sole non-registry Git dependency bevy_mod_outline is fixed by Cargo.lock at commit 8d990de7fa8ceaf11b8215c8414e47956082fba1 with MIT OR Apache-2.0. Source-build feasibility is plausible but constrained: Rust edition 2024, a three-crate workspace, Cargo lock with 618 packages, Bevy 0.19 with Wayland rendering/input, and upstream's pinned Git dependency will require a substantial generated Cargo closure; the Guix daemon is intentionally unavailable, so no build proof is claimed. The local channel contains only the source snapshot guix/tay/packages/starred-s-z.scm:121, not an equivalent package. Blockers: (1) core/src/asset_manifest.rs uses CARGO_MANIFEST_DIR as its asset root; a Guix installation must define the expected installed read-only asset root and wrapper environment, because the development layout is not an adequate runtime contract. (2) The supplied CLI only selects menu, family editor, load, host, or join operations and the engine immediately initializes rendering; no upstream noninteractive/headless startup mode or stdout success marker is evident. An isolated smoke-proof plan may use a temporary XDG_CONFIG_HOME plus an in-container X11/Wayland server and a deterministic timeout, but it must assert an observable marker (for example Bevy INFO or a wrapper log around actual engine startup), not the required screenshot by itself. Exact unblocking prerequisites are the installed asset-path/launcher specification and a deterministic, meaningful smoke contract with a success marker; daemon-backed build and runtime proof remain for the authorized implementation phase. Acceptance gates remain guix lint -L . simgine and guix build -L . simgine, followed by bounded isolated GUI startup evidence stored at .goocastle/evidence/issue-165.png.
