Candidate

Investigate packaging the official OpenAI ChatGPT desktop application with Codex integration for Guix. This explicitly does not request the open-source Codex CLI, which is already straightforward to install/package separately.

Current blocker

As of this review, OpenAI officially distributes the desktop application for macOS and Windows. The official pages do not provide a native Linux artifact or public desktop-application source tree suitable for a reproducible Guix build. The macOS DMG and Microsoft Store package are proprietary platform artifacts and should not be imported or redistributed without explicit license and redistribution review.

Community Linux wrappers/repackaging projects exist, but they are unofficial and must not be treated as official OpenAI releases. Do not confuse this application with openai/codex or the Codex CLI's official Linux binaries.

Research required

  • Monitor for an official Linux desktop release or a publicly buildable desktop source tree.
  • Establish the desktop application's license, redistribution terms, and whether a Guix package may legally redistribute source or binaries.
  • If OpenAI publishes a Linux artifact, inspect its runtime, sandbox, updater, filesystem layout, credential storage, and bundled Codex components.
  • Evaluate whether a source-built web wrapper would be useful, but name and describe it clearly as unofficial rather than chatgpt-desktop.
  • Keep authentication tokens, account state, and user data outside the Guix store.

Acceptance checks when unblocked

  • Package only an authorized official Linux source/artifact, or explicitly scope and name an independently licensed unofficial wrapper.
  • guix lint and guix build succeed without build-time network access.
  • The app launches on Guix System and stores mutable state under normal user directories.
  • Disable or redirect self-update behavior that would attempt to modify the immutable store.
  • Document sandboxing, browser/WebView dependencies, credential storage, and proprietary-service requirements.
