Candidate

Package the official Claude Desktop for Linux beta for Guix, separately from the Claude Code terminal CLI.

Packaging approach

Use a versioned official Linux artifact fetched directly from Anthropic and pinned independently for each architecture. Do not configure the apt repository on the user's system. Investigate whether a public, reproducible source build exists; otherwise document the binary-package rationale and establish the applicable license and redistribution terms before merging.

Research and document:

  • the exact current version, immutable .deb URLs, hashes, and signature provenance;
  • application framework, bundled libraries/notices, native modules, and dynamic library closure;
  • license terms for the application and all redistribution constraints;
  • desktop entry, icons, URL/MIME handlers, sandbox, portals, and credential storage;
  • X11 and native Wayland behavior, including the GlobalShortcuts portal used by Quick Entry;
  • whether Claude Code is bundled, downloaded, or expected separately and how it relates to the terminal package issue;
  • desktop extensions and MCP configuration without embedding secrets in the store;
  • optional Claude Cowork dependencies and isolation: KVM, QEMU, UEFI firmware, virtiofsd, roughly 25 GB of user storage, and the distinction between core desktop support and Cowork support;
  • x86_64 and aarch64 parity.

Anthropic states that the Linux application does not self-update; updates arrive through the system package manager. Verify this in the artifact and keep all application upgrades Guix-managed.

Acceptance checks

  • guix lint -L . claude-desktop passes without new errors.
  • guix build -L . claude-desktop succeeds without build-time network access.
  • The installed launcher starts under a clean Guix environment on Linux.
  • Login and mutable application state use normal user configuration/data directories.
  • No apt repository is installed and no updater attempts to modify the immutable store or download a replacement application.
  • Desktop integration, Wayland/X11 operation, portals, bundled notices, and architecture support are verified.
  • Cowork virtualization support is either tested and packaged explicitly or documented as an optional unsupported feature without weakening the core desktop package.
  • Proprietary-service requirements and the resolved license/redistribution status are documented clearly.
  • Claude Code terminal CLI packaging: #232
