Candidate

  • Canonical upstream: https://github.com/matoom/frostbite
  • Packaging target: v1.18.2 (2025-08-16)
  • Category: MUD client
  • Tags: mud-client, desktop, Qt, DragonRealms, Ruby, scripting
  • Primary language/build ecosystem: C++, qmake, Qt, embedded Ruby
  • License: NOASSERTION; README says MIT but the tree lacks a standalone project license and bundles components
  • License evidence: https://github.com/matoom/frostbite#license
  • Expected Guix packaging difficulty: blocked; expected hard after license review

User-facing deliverable

Qt desktop MUD client focused on DragonRealms, with Ruby scripting, triggers, aliases, and macros.

Packaging approach

Confirm a complete license grant and component mapping, then package the qmake build with Qt and Ruby while unbundling log4qt/Qt Solutions components where possible.

Known blockers and investigation points

Obtain unambiguous project and bundled-component licensing before redistribution.

Acceptance checks

  • Pin an immutable upstream release or commit and record a real Guix source hash.
  • Build without network access using Guix-provided dependencies; do not download runtimes or plugins during the build.
  • Preserve all applicable project and bundled-component license notices.
  • Verify the installed launcher/version output and run an offline protocol smoke test against a local fake MUD endpoint where the platform permits it.
  • Keep profiles, logs, maps, plugins, and other mutable state outside the store.

Existing-package coverage

Checked on 2026-08-22 against GNU Guix, Nonguix, Guix Science, Guix HPC, Guix Past, Guix R Us, and RDE, plus all states of this repository issue tracker. No same-upstream package or existing ticket was found. GNU Guix already packages TinTin++ and POWWOW; this candidate is distinct.

License investigation completed. Frostbite v1.18.2 is packageable: the README declares MIT, bundled Log4Qt is Apache-2.0, Qt Solutions is BSD-3-Clause, and Cleanlooks has explicit LGPL-2.1-with-exception or GPL-3.0 terms. Qt 5 and Ruby are available in Guix.

Moving this ticket back to ready. Implementation must redirect application-directory-relative mutable configuration, logs, profiles, and snapshots into XDG-owned paths, preserve bundled notices, and validate Ruby scripting plus a loopback fake MUD under Xvfb.

Implemented and published in signed commit 115c54bff4. Frostbite 1.18.2 is pinned to 21e6306d0600dcc0301bc66c3c886d56056827d2, builds with Qt5/Ruby, passes upstream testxml (5/5), an isolated user+network-namespace Xvfb/Ruby/fake-MUD smoke with XDG state and store-immutability checks, focused lint, and an exact guix build --check reproducibility rebuild. Independent publication review approved the package and license/notice mapping.
