Candidate

  • Canonical upstream: https://github.com/fiendish/aardwolfclientpackage
  • Packaging target: r2332 / MUSHclient branch commit 8aaa499982f680d921181c2f72fc910ef6ba98bd
  • Category: MUD client
  • Tags: mud-client, Aardwolf, MUSHclient, Lua, Wine, accessibility, profile-data
  • Primary language/build ecosystem: Lua and XML data; Windows AppVeyor/PowerShell and NSIS assembly
  • License: NOASSERTION for the aggregate; contributor code is GPL-3.0-or-later but bundled non-code assets and binaries lack a complete provenance map
  • License evidence: github.com/fiendish/aardwolfclientpackage@8aaa499982/COPYING.txt
  • Expected Guix packaging difficulty: blocked; expected hard after licensing

User-facing deliverable

Aardwolf profile, plugins, mapper data, sounds, accessibility components, and Windows MUSHclient distribution—not a standalone native client.

Packaging approach

Treat this as profile/data packaging only after every asset is licensed; then prove either native Mushkin compatibility or a separately justified source-built MUSHclient/Wine host.

Known blockers and investigation points

Mixed aggregate includes DLLs/executables, a font, sounds, images, databases, help data, and moving binary downloads without complete per-asset rights or reproducible source provenance.

Acceptance checks

  • Pin an immutable upstream release or commit and record a real Guix source hash.
  • Build without network access using Guix-provided dependencies; do not download runtimes or plugins during the build.
  • Preserve all applicable project and bundled-component license notices.
  • Verify the installed launcher/version output and run an offline protocol smoke test against a local fake MUD endpoint where the platform permits it.
  • Keep profiles, logs, maps, plugins, and other mutable state outside the store.

Existing-package coverage

Checked on 2026-08-22 against GNU Guix, Nonguix, Guix Science, Guix HPC, Guix Past, Guix R Us, and RDE, plus all states of this repository issue tracker. No same-upstream package or existing ticket was found. GNU Guix already packages TinTin++ and POWWOW; this candidate is distinct.

Feasibility and license investigation completed. This issue should remain blocked with needs:license-investigation.

Key evidence:

  • Tag r2332 points to commit 8aaa499982f680d921181c2f72fc910ef6ba98bd; source NAR hash is 0j44ssbj5qgwlk0zvn3sp9x29ifjgjp3vfmal8i00rahpj144l3k.
  • The no-install ZIP SHA-256 is 37bfe673bc67ef621adc20c2f063418d536d77051a27ce653a99d61473d72b7b.
  • Release assembly adds 42 generated files, including MUSHclient, LuaJIT, llthreads2, OpenSSL, and LuaSocket binaries downloaded from moving latest releases without immutable commits/digests.
  • GPL-3.0-or-later covers Fiendish/contributor code, not every third-party asset. The bundle has 65 WAVs, 50 PNGs, a bitmap font, databases, DLLs, and EXEs without a complete file-to-license/provenance map.
  • MUSHclient/sounds/music.wav explicitly identifies Microsoft copyright and “All Rights Reserved”; other audio has attribution but no bundled redistribution grant, and most images/sounds lack useful provenance.
  • The package is a 32-bit Windows MUSHclient/MFC bundle, not a native client. Wine is technically possible but would package opaque binaries and requires mutable XDG/Wine-prefix handling.
  • Mushkin (#246) is a promising native host but has not demonstrated compatibility with the full r2332 world/plugin set and still contains Windows-specific Aardwolf plugin paths/FFI.
  • No same-upstream Guix/channel package was found.

Unblocking requirements:

  1. Per-file provenance/license manifest and removal/replacement of unlicensed assets, including music.wav.
  2. Immutable release manifest pinning every generated binary input by source/commit/digest.
  3. A proven host: preferably packaged Mushkin with the complete r2332 plugin suite, or an explicitly authorized Wine/binary policy exception.
  4. Portable replacements for Win32 FFI, mapper backup, TTS, paths, update checks, and font handling as needed.
  5. Offline license-completeness, full plugin/world load, loopback GMCP/Telnet, mapper write/restore, accessibility/sound, and no-store-write tests.

Expected difficulty after licensing is resolved: hard. No package placeholder was added.

Rechecked r2332/head 8aaa499982f680d921181c2f72fc910ef6ba98bd. The aggregate still lacks a complete file-to-license/provenance manifest for its binaries, audio, images, font, and databases, and no acceptable compatible host is currently available.

Closing as not planned. Reopen after unlicensed assets are removed or documented, every generated input is immutably pinned, and either full compatibility with a source-built native host is proven or a Wine/binary exception is explicitly authorized.
