Candidate

  • Upstream canonical URL: https://github.com/larsbrinkhoff/image-tape
  • Source pinned commit/release when known: 0402e216bbd0c3485a8c99bcdb853248763d1b5d (default-branch snapshot checked 2026-08-14)
  • Target concrete installed deliverable: image-tape magnetic-tape image CLI
  • Primary category: storage-media-tool
  • Tags: tape
  • Primary language normalized: C
  • Build system: gnu-build-system with custom install phase
  • SPDX expression: MIT
  • License status: confirmed-free
  • License evidence: The upstream LICENSE was previously inspected at the pinned snapshot and identifies MIT.
  • Difficulty: easy — The plain Makefile lacks an install target, requiring a bounded install phase.
  • Workflow state: ready
  • Existing Guix coverage: Checked 2026-08-14: GNU Guix, Nonguix, Guix Science, Guix HPC, Guix Past, Guix 'R Us, and RDE; no equivalent package with the same upstream origin was found.

Scope and blockers

Install the image-tape executable only.

Acceptance checks

  • guix lint -L. <package-name> and guix build -L. <package-name> pass once a package definition exists.
  • Create a tape image from a local fixture and inspect it without hardware.

Packaged as image-tape in signed commit github.com/htayj/guix-channel@21681af95c. The package reuses the pinned source and adds a downstream data-integrity patch: output files are safely created/truncated, writes are completed across short writes, and write/close failures produce a nonzero exit. The regression suite verifies framing, short-write recovery, ENOSPC handling, and close errors using a tape shim; no physical tape hardware was exercised.
