Candidate

  • Project: War of 1812
  • Candidate upstream/homepage: http://www.zincland.com/7drl/1812
  • Discovery evidence: IRLDb
  • Reported license: open source (BSD), freeware
  • License status: reported free license; verify exact terms and asset coverage against the pinned upstream source
  • Catalog note: IRLDb status: 7drl.

Scope

Package the independently playable roguelike from source. The canonical repository, latest stable release, source hash, complete dependency closure, and relationship to parent games or sibling forks must be established before implementation. Do not substitute an opaque prebuilt binary.

Research checklist

  • Identify the canonical maintained source repository and immutable release/commit.
  • Verify the exact FOSS license for code and every installed font, tile, sound, map, documentation, and bundled dependency.
  • Check GNU Guix and the channel audit set for an equivalent same-upstream package.
  • Determine the offline build system and source closure, including submodules or language registries.
  • Identify updater, telemetry, runtime download, mutable-state, and network behavior that needs Guix integration.

Acceptance checks

  • guix lint -L . <package> has no package-specific findings.
  • guix build -L . --no-grafts <package> succeeds without network access or opaque binaries.
  • Upstream tests run where available, and guix build -L . --no-grafts --check <package> verifies reproducibility.
  • A fresh HOME/XDG smoke test starts a real local game, exercises meaningful gameplay or save/load behavior, and proves no store writes.
  • Installed license and third-party notices cover the shipped closure and assets.

Goocastle recorded disposition: blocked.

Blocked on a source-only dependency and deterministic runtime proof. Canonical upstream is http://www.zincland.com/7drl/1812/1812_001.zip, latest release 001 dated March 24, 2020 (archive files dated 2020-03-21; HTTP Last-Modified 2020-03-24T23:25:22Z), SHA-256 74fbc0c2b0ec589ed4573df646bff49b546915325c0bb6a4546454d7217faf35. Its linux/BUILD.TXT and Makefile require libtcod 1.15.1 plus SDL 1.2 and SDL_mixer 1.2 development libraries; premake generates sources with Python and g++ builds the C++ sources. The archive supplies a prebuilt libtcod.so/static library and a truncated vendored source tree whose root CMakeLists.txt is absent. Guix currently exposes only libtcod 2.2.2, not a compatible 1.15.1 input. A separate libtcod 1.15.1 commit f228e723f374e231d0d688c6d7f6626a98cc32ac exists, but a source-only build/dependency closure was not established within this research phase. Licensing evidence is otherwise favorable at the fixed archive: project .cpp/.h/.txt/map assets are BSD/public domain with an explicit permissive grant; libtcod 1.15.1 is BSD-3-Clause; Oxygen Mono is OFL; SDL licensing is embedded. There is no local equivalent package for this project. Upstream also exposes only an interactive graphical executable and no documented noninteractive smoke mode, so a safe deterministic meaningful runtime contract must be supplied by a package wrapper or obtained upstream. Unblocked only if implementation provides a complete source origin/build closure for libtcod 1.15.1 (with exact license evidence for SDL/SDL_mixer inputs and all shipped assets) and a deterministic, meaningful, isolated runtime marker proving gameplay/save or load behavior without store writes.
