Scope

Package the independently playable roguelike variant from source. The canonical repository, latest stable release, source hash, complete dependency closure, and relationship to parent games or sibling forks must be established before implementation. Do not substitute an opaque prebuilt binary.

Research checklist

  • Identify the canonical maintained source repository and immutable release/commit.
  • Verify the exact FOSS license for code and every installed font, tile, sound, map, documentation, and bundled dependency.
  • Check GNU Guix and the channel audit set for an equivalent same-upstream package.
  • Determine the offline build system and source closure, including submodules or language registries.
  • Identify updater, telemetry, runtime download, mutable-state, and network behavior that needs Guix integration.

Acceptance checks

  • guix lint -L . <package> has no package-specific findings.
  • guix build -L . --no-grafts <package> succeeds without network access or opaque binaries.
  • Upstream tests run where available, and guix build -L . --no-grafts --check <package> verifies reproducibility.
  • A fresh HOME/XDG smoke test starts a real local game, exercises meaningful gameplay or save/load behavior, and proves no store writes.
  • Installed license and third-party notices cover the shipped closure and assets.

Goocastle recorded disposition: blocked.

Blocked by incomplete upstream license provenance. The canonical origin is https://github.com/zaimoni/zaiband, whose repository description calls it a mothballed Angband 3.0.6 fork. It has no tags or releases; the immutable source revision inspected is master 5a24bfe51695241fe15697150e35a58c44aa5d8f (fetched at fixed depth), with no Git submodules. There is no existing Zaiband or zaimoni/zaiband package in the local channel. Source metadata shows a conventional GNU-make C build: src/Makefile.std defaults to GCC, GNU make, X11 and ncurses, while an alternate console Makefile also exists; this is technically plausible for daemon-backed assessment, although no build was attempted because the host boundary forbids guix shell and no Guix daemon is available. Packaging is unsafe regardless: COPYING at the fixed revision grants only educational/research/not-for-profit copying under the old Moria/Angband license and explicitly says that parts remain available only under that license and that it remains the only valid license until all parts are relicensed. It further says material changes not yet license-firewalled must later be relicensed. A bounded inventory found C/header files without clear copyright or license markers. The bundled graphics are CC BY 3.0 and fonts have a per-file license summary, but COPYING states only that sounds are freeware, without identifying a license, grant, or rights holder. These facts disqualify unrestricted Guix distribution and are not resolved by a parent license. Unblock condition: an authoritative upstream source revision that relicenses all included code and assets under specific redistribution-compatible FOSS terms, or a clean mixed-origin closure where every retained component, including each removed or substituted sound and asset, has explicit license and provenance evidence at the exact revision.
