Flag-Empires: The Complete Chronicle

A historical record of the Banner-Dynasties from the Dawn Age to the Last Year, chronicling the rise and fall of a civilization built on cloth, salt, and the politics of maritime trade.

Description

This chronicle follows the Seal-Keeper tradition of cross-referencing testimony, maintaining canonical identification numbers, and distinguishing between archive fact and witness belief. The narrative spans five ages of empire, from the first cloth-signs raised above basalt terraces to the administrative dissolution that marked the end of unified rule.

The Flag-Empires were a maritime-commercial civilization that emerged from scattered hill clans, developed sophisticated trade networks across the Crescent Coasts, expanded inland through the Iron Roads, and ultimately collapsed under the weight of corruption, internal strife, and the impossibility of governing such a vast territory through cloth banners and salt courts.

Structure

The complete chronicle consists of three main books, each covering a crucial period of imperial development:

Book I: The Standard of Flagartha

  • Arc 1: 'The Wind Before Names' - The Dawn Age clan origins and proto-banner development
  • Arc 2: Raising the First Mast-City - Foundation of Kher Valaan and House Talar's river-ridge binding
  • Arc 3: Consolidation and Covenant Wars - Banner fealty standardization and the East March uprisings
  • Arc 4: Crown of Seven Cloths - Peak Flagarthan integration and succession ritualization

Book II: The Crescent of Flagistan

  • Arc 1: Crossing to the Crescent Coasts - Admirals' maritime charter and salt court founding
  • Arc 2: Coin, Grain, and Fracture - Trade boom, inequality, and provincial military autonomy
  • Arc 3: The Hundred Harbors Crisis - Pirate leagues, embargo spirals, and the Coup of the Fifth Ledger
  • Arc 4: The Quiet Partition - Administrative split masked as reform through child hostage treaties

Book III: Surface and Last Year

  • Arc 1: Iron Roads and Surface Doctrine - Third Age inland expansion and bureaucratic metrics faith
  • Arc 2: The Two Famines - Logistics success without food justice and Road-Warden mutiny
  • Arc 3: Lantern Riots to Border Fires - Legitimacy collapse and provisional council emergence
  • Arc 4: The Last Year - Month-by-month unraveling, dissolution decrees, and post-fall memory politics

How to Read

The chronicle is written in high chronicle style, moving between three registers:

  • Annal: Factual record-keeping in archival format
  • Witness: First-person testimony and fragment quotations
  • Lament: Lyrical reflection on historical meaning and loss

Each major section includes:

  • Canon ID references (format: FE-[AGE]-[BOOK]-[SERIES]-[ITEM])
  • Reliability classifications (R1-R5 scale)
  • Cross-referenced testimony and dispute annotations
  • Temporal markers using the imperial age system (DA, FA, SA, TA, LA)

Reading Order

  1. Style Bible and Canon Schema (reference material for understanding the chronicle's methodology)
  2. Master Outline (overview of the complete narrative arc)
  3. Books I-III (the main historical narrative)
  4. Appendices (supplementary materials including house genealogies and disputed entries)

For casual reading, the main narrative in Books I-III can be read independently. For scholarly engagement, the reference materials provide essential context for evaluating source reliability and narrative construction.

Historical Methodology

This chronicle follows historical practices established by the Seal-Keepers of the Salt Courts:

  • Multiple Source Verification: Major events reference multiple canonical sources
  • Reliability Classification: All sources rated R1-R5 based on corroboration quality
  • Dispute Documentation: Contradictory accounts preserved rather than reconciled
  • Temporal Precision: Events dated using contemporary imperial calendars when available

Historical Note

While presented as historical chronicle, this is a work of speculative fiction exploring themes of imperial rise and fall, the politics of trade and bureaucracy, and the way memory shapes historical narrative. Any resemblance to actual historical empires, while perhaps inevitable in a work dealing with universal patterns of political development, is coincidental.
